Thomas Henry Huxley was a biologist, public educator, and a central figure in Victorian science, best known as “Darwin’s Bulldog” for his vigorous public defense of the theory of evolution. Born into modest circumstances, he rose through academic merit and produced a large body of work in anatomy, embryology, morphology, and paleontology, consolidating arguments about humanity’s place in the animal kingdom in Evidence as to Man's Place in Nature (1863).
Beyond his research, Huxley was an institutional organizer and reformer: for three decades he held the Chair of Natural History at the School of Mines, served as Executive Secretary of the Royal Society and later as its President, and helped professionalize and renew the generations of English science. His public role included famous debates, notably the 1860 confrontation at Oxford, which came to symbolize the nineteenth‑century conflict between science and religion.
Huxley also coined the term “agnosticism” to define an intellectual stance on metaphysical questions, and he was active in scientific popularization and educational reform. His legacy endures both through his defense of evolution and through the model of public, institutionalized scientists he helped establish; his family produced several subsequent generations of prominent intellectuals and scientists.
