Tonie Marshall was a French-American filmmaker, screenwriter and actress whose work left a mark on contemporary French cinema. After an early period acting in small roles, she made her directorial debut with Pentimento (1990) and established herself with Pas très Catholique (1994), which was selected for Berlin. Her greatest recognition came with Vénus beauté (Institut) (1999), a romantic comedy set in a Parisian beauty salon that earned her four César Awards in 2000, including Best Director — the first woman to win that prize — and helped advance Audrey Tautou’s career. Marshall’s work engages with the tradition of French auteur cinema, influenced by Jacques Demy and by films such as Belle de Jour, combining lightness with social observation. Her films often explore the female experience, romantic relationships and professional tensions, especially in her later work. In 2002, Au plus près du Paradis was nominated for the Golden Lion in Venice. In the following decades Marshall remained active in debates about gender equality in film. Involvement with initiatives such as the 50/50 collective and the Fondation des femmes, as well as her film Number One (2017), reflect her concern with women’s presence in decision-making roles. She died in 2020, leaving a legacy marked by a symbolic César victory and a filmography committed to making women’s narratives visible.
