Tony Benn (Anthony Neil Wedgwood Benn) was a central figure in British Labour politics in the second half of the twentieth century. A Member of Parliament for nearly five decades, he held ministerial office in Harold Wilson’s governments, notably as Postmaster General — responsible for opening the Post Office Tower — and later as Minister of Technology. From 1974 to 1979 he served in the cabinet first as Secretary of State for Industry and then as Secretary of State for Energy.

He inherited a hereditary title that temporarily prevented him from remaining in the House of Commons; he led the campaign that culminated in the Peerage Act 1963, which allowed the renunciation of hereditary titles and restored his parliamentary career. After leaving government, he established himself as a leading figure of the Labour Party’s left wing, giving rise to the terms “Bennism” and “Bennite” to describe his positions.

An activist and political intellectual, he chaired the Fabian Society and later the Stop the War Coalition (2001–2014). His work was defined by democratic socialism and a strain of Christian socialism committed to social justice and a secular state. He influenced later generations of Labour left leaders and left a lasting legacy in the party’s internal debate.
