Tony Esposito was a Canadian-American ice hockey goaltender who excelled in the National Hockey League over 16 seasons, most of them with the Chicago Blackhawks. Recognized as one of the pioneers of the butterfly style, he became a technical reference and set impressive individual records, including the modern-era mark of 15 consecutive shutouts in a single season (1970).
In his debut season with Chicago he won the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie and earned the first of three Vezina Trophies, the award then given to the goaltender of the team that allowed the fewest goals. He was selected to the league’s All-Star teams several times and was once a finalist for the Hart Trophy. His play earned him the nickname “Tony O” and the Blackhawks retired his number 35.
Esposito was one of the goaltenders for Team Canada in the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union, posting the best goals-against average and save percentage among the participating goalies. Acknowledged for his technical and competitive contributions, his legacy includes influence on the development of the position and a prominent place among the NHL’s greats.
