Truus Wijsmuller‑Meijer was a central figure in protecting Jewish children and refugees before and during World War II. As a social worker and activist, she organized and carried out cross‑border rescue operations, taking an active role in the Kindertransport and other initiatives that evacuated thousands from Nazi danger. Her direct actions included trips to cities such as Vienna, where she secured permissions — even in discussions with Nazi officials — to bring whole groups of children to safety.
Through her coordination with international committees and relief networks, Truus helped save more than ten thousand lives, arranging reception in the Netherlands and sending the majority of the children to the United Kingdom. Her practical courage and administrative skill were decisive in organizing trains, documentation, and shelter under extremely adverse conditions.
After the war, she remained civically engaged through service in Amsterdam’s municipal administration and in health and social welfare institutions. She was also recognized internationally for her humanitarian role, receiving honors that underscore her legacy as a defender of those persecuted during the Nazi era.
