American dancer and choreographer Twyla Tharp is a central figure in twentieth-century contemporary dance, known for blending ballet, jazz, and pop culture into innovative works. Over more than four decades she created over 130 pieces and built a career spanning the stage, television, and film, collaborating with leading companies such as American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and the Martha Graham Dance Company. Trained in Art History, she deepened her studies with masters including Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham and forged professional ties by joining the Paul Taylor Dance Company before founding her own company in 1965. Her work with Mikhail Baryshnikov—most notably the piece Cutting Up and the television special Baryshnikov by Tharp—bolstered her international reputation and earned Emmy awards. When she moved into musical theater and Broadway she reached wider audiences and critical acclaim, most prominently with Movin' Out, the production based on the songs of Billy Joel that won her the Tony Award for Best Choreography, as well as with works like The Catherine Wheel and Singin' in the Rain. Her honors include major performing-arts awards and the National Medal of Arts for her contribution to American culture.
