Václav Havel was a playwright, essayist and dissident leader who became a central figure in Czechoslovakia’s transition from communism to democracy. He gained an international reputation with absurdist plays such as The Garden Party and The Memorandum, works that indirectly criticized the regime and were crucial to his public profile. Banned from the theatre after 1968, Havel intensified his political activity, helping to found initiatives such as Charter 77 and the Committee for the Defence of the Unjustly Prosecuted, which led to his imprisonment and to surveillance by the secret police.

At the end of the 1980s Havel emerged as the moral leader of the Velvet Revolution and served as president of Czechoslovakia (1989–1992) and, after the country’s dissolution, became the first president of the Czech Republic (1993–2003). During his terms he promoted European and Atlantic integration and worked on issues of national reconciliation, although some of his domestic positions were controversial. After leaving the presidency he remained active as a public intellectual, founding organizations and initiatives focused on historical memory, human rights and civic debate.

His legacy combines literary contribution, civic courage and political leadership, recognized by international awards and by public institutions and initiatives that bear his name.
