Valentine "Valya" Bargmann was a mathematician and theoretical physicist of German origin who developed a significant part of his career in the United States. Educated in Berlin and Zurich, he worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton as an assistant to Albert Einstein and later taught at Princeton for decades. His work lay at the intersection of pure mathematics and theoretical physics, with central contributions to group theory, unitary representation, and quantum mechanics.

Bargmann is known for fundamental results: the classification of the irreducible representations of SL2(R) and of the Lorentz group; the theorem now bearing his name on projective representations of Lie groups; and the Bargmann–Wigner equations for particles of arbitrary spin. He also introduced the holomorphic representation on Segal–Bargmann spaces, studied bounds on the number of bound states, and formulated the Bargmann–Michel–Telegdi equation for relativistic precession.

Recognized by the scientific community, he received honors such as election to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Wigner Medal, and the Max Planck Medal. His legacy remains active in the use of group theory in physics, the mathematical formulation of quantum systems, and applications to soliton theory and analytic function theory.
