Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíu was a Greek musician in the neoclassical, progressive, electronic and ambient genres. His best-known compositions include the Oscar-winning theme of 1981 for the film Chariots of Fire, the soundtrack for the classic Blade Runner, and the soundtrack for the film 1492: Conquest of Paradise. He is also known for the use of his music in Carl Sagan's PBS series Cosmos. Among his compositions is also the theme for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Vangelis began composing at four years of age, becoming largely self-taught in music. He refused traditional piano lessons, and during his career he had limited ability to read or write musical scores. He studied classical music, painting and conducting at the Academy of Arts in Athens.
In 1963 he formed a pop group, Forminx, which became very popular in Greece; it ended in 1966. During the 1968 student uprising he moved to Paris and founded the progressive rock band Aphrodite's Child with members Demis Roussos, vocalist, and Loukas Sideras.
