Veit Harlan was a German film director and actor whose career reached its peak during the Nazi period. He became a central figure in the Third Reich’s film production, known for lavish, expensive films widely promoted by the regime’s propaganda apparatus. His most infamous work, Jud Süß (1940), was explicitly antisemitic and cemented his notoriety, receiving major honors at the time and later provoking debates about cinema’s role in spreading hatred.
After the war, Harlan was prosecuted for crimes against humanity because of his involvement in Nazi propaganda; he was acquitted in controversial trials that continue to draw criticism over how they treated artistic and moral responsibility. He defended himself by claiming he had been acting under orders from the regime, an argument accepted by the courts that tried him.
His legacy is deeply ambiguous: some critics acknowledge technical merits in films such as Opfergang (1944), while historians and survivors emphasize the harmful effect his work had in legitimizing antisemitism. His family and public reception continued to dispute his responsibility in the following decades, inspiring films and investigations into his career.
