Victor Bourgeois was a Belgian architect and urban planner, a central figure of architectural modernism in Belgium. Trained at the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Bruxelles, he first attracted attention at 25 with his design for the Cité Moderne in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe — a housing complex without ornamentation, characterized by sober volumes and flat roofs that brought him international recognition. In 1925 he won the Grand Prize at the Paris Decorative Arts exhibition.
Also active in theoretical discussion and cultural life, Bourgeois co-founded and edited publications such as the magazine 7 Arts and the Club des Amis du Septième Art; he presided over the first International Congresses of Modern Architecture (CIAM) in 1928 and coordinated the 1930 edition in Brussels. Notable projects include participation in the Cité du Weissenhof (Stuttgart, 1927), pavilions for international exhibitions and the Belgian Building at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.
He led the architecture studio at La Cambre from 1934 to 1962 and left a large body of public and private work, ranging from social housing and libraries to exhibition pavilions and cultural centers. His legacy endures in the spread of the modernist vocabulary in Belgium and in preserved works regarded as landmarks of twentieth-century architecture.
