Vincent T. Bugliosi Jr. was an American prosecutor and author whose career rose to national prominence when, as Deputy District Attorney of Los Angeles County (1964–1972), he led the successful prosecution of Charles Manson and other defendants for the Tate–LaBianca murders in August 1969. His trial skills were notable for an impressive conviction record: 105 wins in 106 jury trials, including 21 murder convictions. After leaving the district attorney’s office in 1972, Bugliosi entered private practice, working on both defense and prosecution in criminal cases, and made two unsuccessful bids for Los Angeles District Attorney. In private practice he secured important acquittals and became well known for handling high-profile cases. At the same time, he gained distinction as a nonfiction legal writer, publishing analyses and critiques of trials and political decisions, including work on the O. J. Simpson case and investigations into the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. In his books he combined forensic experience with a critical stance toward the justice system and the role of the media, extending his public influence beyond the courtroom. Legacy: he came to be remembered both for his excellence as a litigator and for a body of writing that sought to explain and challenge major criminal and political controversies in the United States.
