Virgil Thomson was an American composer and music critic, a central figure in shaping what became known as the “American sound” in twentieth-century art music. Trained at Harvard and based for decades in Paris, he was part of the circle of artists in the French capital during the 1920s, worked with Nadia Boulanger, and maintained a long artistic and personal partnership with the painter Maurice Grosser. His collaboration with Gertrude Stein produced notable works, most famously the opera Four Saints in Three Acts (1934) and, later, The Mother of Us All (1947), in which he blended elements of Baptist hymnody, Gregorian chant, and popular music, employing a moderately tonal harmonic language and a restrained aesthetic. For film, he composed scores for government documentaries such as The Plow That Broke the Plains and The River, and won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1949 for the score to Louisiana Story. Beyond his compositions, Thomson played a significant role as a critic for the New York Herald-Tribune (1940–1954), influencing debates about cultural identity and the music market in the United States. His outspoken personality and public positions provoked controversy, but also helped shape generations of American composers and affirm a national tonal tradition.
