Vittorio Prodi was an Italian physicist and politician who built an established academic career at the University of Bologna, where he served as an associate professor and focused on geophysical research, producing numerous publications and five international patents. His university and scientific work preceded his entry into public life and shaped his emphasis on science and technology issues. In local government, he was president of the Province of Bologna from 1995 to 2004, elected by a large majority and representing the Margherita political area. That role brought him into European politics: he was elected to the European Parliament in 2004 and re-elected in 2009, serving on key committees such as Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) and Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE). While working in Brussels he became known for linking his scientific background to public policy, and he also took part in subcommittees on human rights and in delegations for external relations, including Mercosur, the United States and South Africa. His public career was defined by the intersection of science, regional administration and European politics.
