Vladimir Mayakovsky

Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky was a Russian poet, playwright, artist and cultural agitator whose work had a profound impact on 20th‑century poetry. A central figure in Cubo‑Futurism and the journal LEF, he combined formal innovation with social commitment, advocating a language close to everyday speech and an audacious use of rhyme, neologisms and rhythm. His output includes long and short poems, socially charged plays, essays on poetic theory, film scripts and propaganda texts produced during the consolidation of the Soviet state. Born in Imperial Georgia and later based in Moscow, Mayakovsky joined the revolutionary movement at an early age and took part in public campaigns after the October Revolution. He became known for public performances and readings before large audiences and for travels to Europe, Mexico and the United States. At the same time, he clashed with bureaucratic sectors that sought to standardize literary production. Praised by critics and peers, he is often listed among the greatest poets of his era and referred to as “the poet of the Revolution.” His work influenced poets and movements beyond Russia and has been set to music and reintroduced in Brazil by artists such as João Bosco and Caetano Veloso.
