Wally Amos was an entrepreneur and cultural communicator best known for turning a homemade cookie recipe into a national brand. He began his career in the entertainment business as the first African-American agent at the William Morris Agency, representing artists such as Simon & Garfunkel, The Temptations and Marvin Gaye — a practice that, notably, included sending his cookies as a calling card. In 1975 he founded Famous Amos, which popularized the chocolate chip cookie in U.S. supermarkets and made him a recognizable figure in pop culture.
Beyond the food business, Amos devoted himself to adult literacy, hosting a television program aimed at teaching reading and writing books with motivational and autobiographical themes. His business career had highs and lows: he sold Famous Amos amid financial difficulties and went on to launch new brands, including Uncle Wally’s and The Cookie Kahuna, continuing to work in specialty retail until the end of his career.
His legacy combines popular entrepreneurship, advocacy for literacy and media presence, leaving an imprint both on the food industry and on efforts to promote adult reading.
