Walt Kelly was an American cartoonist and animator, best known for creating the strip Pogo, which became a vehicle for political and philosophical commentary. He began his animation career at Walt Disney Productions in 1936, contributing to films such as Pinocchio, Fantasia, The Reluctant Dragon, and Dumbo before moving into comics and newspaper work. After leaving the studio amid the labor tensions of the early 1940s, Kelly produced a wide range of work for Dell Comics: Disney film adaptations, children’s stories, advertising series, and pantomime comics. In 1943 he created Pogo in Animal Comics; the character evolved until receiving its own daily strip, set in a swamp inhabited by animals who reflected human debates. In addition to his work as a cartoonist, Kelly worked as a reporter and art director at newspapers, reaffirming his ties to journalism. His work became noted for blending humor, political satire, and graphic finesse, influencing generations of cartoonists and establishing Pogo as a touchstone of mid‑century American pop culture and social commentary.
