Walter H. Breen was an American numismatist and writer whose work has had a lasting impact on the attribution and study of U.S. and colonial coins. Author of widely cited reference works — including the Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins and encyclopedias on cents and commemorative coins — Breen coined cataloging terms still used by collectors and scholars to identify varieties. His output included collaborations with other specialists and posthumous editions organized by researchers who preserved and expanded his bibliographic legacy.
Beyond numismatics, he compiled and published material on the history of sexuality under a pseudonym, producing works that provoked controversy for their form and content. His public life was marked by conflicts and allegations of sexual crimes that affected his reputation and personal relationships, including within the science fiction community, where he maintained ties to authors and genre circles.
