Walther von Brauchitsch was a German field marshal and Chief of the Army (OKH) from February 1938 to December 1941. Born into the Prussian military aristocracy, he built his career before World War I, serving on staff and on the Western Front, where he received the Iron Cross and other decorations. In the interwar years he took part in reorganizing artillery and army training, establishing himself as a professional leader as Germany rearmed. As Commander-in-Chief he played a central role in the early campaigns of World War II: he was a key figure in the Battle of France and oversaw the invasions of Yugoslavia and Greece. For his performance in 1940 he was promoted to Generalfeldmarschall. Although personally opposed to Nazism, he became financially dependent on Adolf Hitler. After the failure of the offensive toward Moscow and an attack of angina in November 1941, Brauchitsch was held responsible for the setback and replaced, spending the rest of the war in enforced retirement. He was detained at the end of the conflict and accused of war crimes, but died in 1948 before standing trial. His legacy remains tied to the military conduct of Germany’s early victories and to the tensions between professional career and political commitment in the Nazi era.
