Wang Jingwei was a Chinese politician active in the first half of the 20th century and a central figure in the Kuomintang’s internal struggles after Sun Yat‑sen’s death. A member of the Tongmenghui and a participant in the Xinhai Revolution, he rose to prominence as leader of the KMT’s left wing, initially favoring cooperation with the Communist Party and holding important posts in Sun’s revolutionary government in Guangzhou. During the 1920s he worked as a political organizer and speaker, but lost the contest for party leadership to Chiang Kai‑shek; Chiang’s purge of communists and success in the Northern Expedition fragmented the KMT and led to the fall of Wang’s Wuhan government. Wang then remained in public life and sought international contacts, including visits to Europe. With the escalation of the Sino‑Japanese War, Wang became more controversial when he accepted leadership of a Japan‑backed collaborationist regime in Nanjing, a choice that has defined his historical reputation. That decision is widely disputed, and because of his cooperation with the Japanese occupation many Chinese historians have associated him with treason. Wang died in 1944 in Japan; his legacy remains contested, seen variously in terms of his nationalism, his role in KMT factional struggles, and the position he took during the Japanese occupation.
