Werner Fenchel was a mathematician born in Germany who became established in the Danish academic world, remembered as a pioneer of convex analysis. Trained in Berlin, he initially worked in Göttingen and, after 1933, moved to Denmark where he combined research, translation and scientific editing, taking on the editorial leadership of a mathematical journal and leading seminars in Copenhagen. His scholarly output covered differential geometry, lattice theory and, above all, convex geometry; in collaboration with Tommy Bonnesen he published reference works on convex bodies. He also contributed to the theory of isometry groups in non-Euclidean spaces and left a legacy in the coordinates now known as Fenchel–Nielsen coordinates in Teichmüller theory. Throughout his career he taught at European and North American institutions, holding chairs in Copenhagen and at the Technical University of Denmark, where he became professor emeritus. He was elected to the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and participated in editing the works of Jakob Nielsen, securing a lasting role in the mathematical community.
