Werner Theodor Otto Forßmann was a German surgeon whose boldness transformed diagnostic cardiology. Initially interested in invasive techniques, Forßmann showed in 1929 that a catheter could be introduced directly into the heart’s circulation — performing the first human cardiac catheterization on himself and radiographically recording the catheter in the right atrium. That pioneering act, despite controversy and initial institutional sanctions, paved the way for hemodynamic measurements and direct drug administration.

After facing professional difficulties and shifting his focus to urology, Forßmann later regained recognition when his work inspired researchers such as André Cournand and Dickinson Richards to develop diagnostic and therapeutic applications of catheterization. In 1956 he received, jointly with them, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He later held academic posts as an honorary professor and joined several scientific societies.

His technical legacy is central to the development of modern endovascular procedures. Although his career included periods of professional isolation and controversial political affiliation during 1932–1945, his practical contribution to the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease remains fundamental.
