Wiley Hardeman Post was a prominent American aviator in the interwar period, best known for his navigation feats and advances in high-altitude flight. He rose to prominence by winning an air race between Chicago and Los Angeles in 1930 and, the following year, completing a round‑the‑world trip with navigator Harold Gatty in under nine days aboard the Lockheed Vega named Winnie Mae, setting a new speed record. In 1933 he further established his reputation by becoming the first pilot to fly solo around the world.

Beyond his achievements as a pilot, Post devoted himself to high‑altitude flight research, helping develop one of the earliest pressure suits and identifying the existence of the jet stream—a discovery that influenced modern aviation. His work combined practical skill as a mechanic with an explorer’s spirit and technological originality.

Post’s career ended tragically in 1935 when he was killed in an air accident in Alaska along with humorist Will Rogers. His legacy remains tied to aviation’s pioneering era, both for record‑breaking flights and technical contributions to high‑altitude flying.
