Wilhelm Heinrich Westphal was a German physicist whose academic career spanned much of the twentieth century, with a long tenure in Berlin. Educated between 1902 and 1906 in Bonn, Munich and Stuttgart, he completed his doctorate in 1908 and his habilitation in 1913, then served as an assistant at the Institute of Physics of Humboldt University. After serving in World War I, he became a professor at Humboldt University and, from 1928, held a chair at the Technical University of Berlin until his retirement in 1955. Westphal was also notable as an author and popularizer: his textbook Physik – Ein Lehrbuch reached at least 26 editions and was revised and translated over decades. He also published practical laboratory manuals and popular works such as Physikalisches Praktikum and Physik des alltäglichen Lebens, as well as titles on relativity and atomic energy, some of which appeared or were received internationally. Historically, he appears as the first recorded German scientist to visit the Soviet Union, in 1921, and he influenced physics education in Germany through his books and courses. His legacy lies chiefly in training generations of students and producing didactic texts that were widely used throughout the twentieth century.
