Wilhelm Maximilian Wundt was a German physician, philosopher, and psychologist whose work shaped the institutionalization of psychology as a scientific discipline. In 1873 he published the foundational book Principles of Physiological Psychology, a programmatic work that sought to place the study of the mind within the natural sciences, and in 1879 he established in Leipzig the first laboratory devoted to experimental psychological research. These milestones turned his center into an international reference and trained generations of researchers who carried methods and institutions around the world.
In addition to experimental research on sensation, perception, reaction time, and emotions, Wundt integrated knowledge from physiology and philosophy, developing a psychology that combined psychophysical measurement with theoretical reflection. Guided by an empiricist perspective, he proposed quantitative relations between stimulus intensity and reaction time, known as Wundt’s law, and investigated broader phenomena in cultural psychology in his work Völkerpsychologie.
Also active in teaching and periodical publications, Wundt left an institutional and methodological legacy: the spread of laboratories, journals, and courses that propelled several twentieth-century currents. His work is recognized for having created foundations for modern experimental psychology and for influencing both elementalist approaches and later currents of scientific psychology.
