Willem Johan Cornelis Arondéus was a Dutch artist and writer who joined the resistance against the Nazi occupation during World War II. Before the war he made a name for himself as an illustrator, painter and author — creating murals, illustrations for respected poets and his own works, including novels and essays on monumental painting. He lived modestly but was active in cultural and publishing circles. In 1942 he founded the clandestine periodical Brandarisbrief, which later merged with De Vrije Kunstenaar; that connection brought him into contact with document‑forging networks led by Gerrit van der Veen. Arondéus took part in the attack on the Amsterdam municipal registration office on 27 March 1943, an operation intended to prevent the identification of Jews and other persecuted people; a large portion of the records was destroyed. Arrested soon after, Arondéus claimed responsibility at his trial and was sentenced to death; executed on 1 July 1943, he became a symbol of courage. He was recognized posthumously by the Dutch government with the Resistance Memorial Cross and, in 1986, was honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations. Before his execution he publicly declared his pride in being a gay man, leaving a legacy that also resonates in the history of LGBT rights and civil resistance.
