Willem de Kooning was one of the central figures of Abstract Expressionism and a pioneer of what came to be called action painting. A Dutch-born artist who became an American citizen, he built his career in New York beginning in the 1930s and 1940s, when he joined the circle that would be known as the New York School alongside Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline and others. His work ranged across series of women, urban landscapes and gestural abstractions, characterized by vigorous brushwork, layered color and a tension between figuration and abstraction. His early training in the Netherlands and the influences of Arshile Gorky, Fernand Léger and European modernism were decisive for his career; in New York he also received critical support from Clement Greenberg and Harold Rosenberg. He worked on murals for the Federal Art Project and achieved institutional recognition with exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and awards such as the Logan Medal and the Andrew W. Mellon Prize. Over the decades he expanded his practice to sculpture and maintained a prolific output until his later years, when he was affected by Alzheimer’s disease. His work influenced generations and remains a touchstone for discussions of gesture, materiality and the autonomy of painting in the postwar period.
