Willem Frederik Johannes Pijper was a Dutch composer, music critic and teacher, recognized as one of the leading composers in the Netherlands during the first half of the 20th century. Largely self-taught in composition, Pijper early developed an interest in symmetrical structures and techniques based on small “germ cells,” moving from late influences of Mahler toward a language notable for polychorality and frequent use of the octatonic scale — sometimes referred to in Dutch as the “Pijper scale.” Also active as a critic, he played a controversial role in local cultural affairs, combining journalistic work with advisory roles in concert halls. In 1926 he founded the magazine De Muziek with Paul F. Sanders and published collections of essays that influenced the Dutch musical scene. His output includes symphonies, concertos (piano, violin, cello), chamber music and works for piano; notable are the stylistic transformations between his First and Second Symphonies and the emotional character of works such as the Third Symphony. As a teacher, Pijper exerted great influence on generations of Dutch composers, serving as senior professor of orchestration and later as director of the Rotterdam Conservatory, a legacy that cemented his importance in modern Dutch music.
