William Dean Howells was an American writer and literary critic central to the development of realism in the United States. A prolific author—writing novels, criticism, biographies, poetry, drama and travel books—he became known for articulating and defending realist principles in American prose, both in his columns and in works of fiction. As editor of influential periodicals such as The Atlantic Monthly and Harper's Magazine, Howells introduced American readers to European realists and promoted new American writers, helping shape the reception of Tolstoy, Turgenev, Zola and Ibsen in the United States. His literary criticism, collected in works such as Criticism and Fiction (1891), systematized his aesthetic views. As a novelist he addressed contrasts between societies and social issues: from early works showing Henry James’s influence to novels that exposed social injustices, notably The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885) and A Modern Instance (Annie Kilburn) (1888). His impact extended into the publishing world and helped form an American realist school that influenced literature in the late nineteenth century.
