William R. Pogue was an American astronaut and aviator whose career spanned the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot, test pilot and instructor, rising to the rank of colonel. He earned a degree in Education and a master’s in Mathematics, taught at the USAF Academy and served on exchange as a test pilot with the Royal Air Force, gaining extensive experience in dozens of aircraft types. Selected by NASA in 1966, he served on support crews for the Apollo missions and was the pilot of Skylab 4 (1973–1974), the final crewed mission to the Skylab space station. Aboard Skylab, the three-man crew carried out hundreds of scientific experiments, made observations of Earth and the Sun and set the then-record for human time in orbit—84 days—while conducting extravehicular activities and significant remote-sensing data collection. After leaving the USAF and NASA, Pogue devoted himself to teaching, aerospace consulting, public outreach on life and operations in space, and writing, authoring works on curiosities and science fiction. His contributions span both military aviation and crewed space exploration through research conducted in orbit and the education of subsequent generations in the aerospace field.
