William James Sidis was an American prodigy known for exceptional mathematical and linguistic abilities and for a life defined by precocity and a rejection of fame. He became famous for entering Harvard at 11 and completing his bachelor’s degree cum laude at 16, prompting public expectations that he would become a leading mathematician. The son of Russian Jewish immigrants and raised in an intellectual environment, Sidis showed early mastery of several languages and even created his own tongue.
Despite his early talent, Sidis moved away from an academic career in mathematics: he worked briefly as an assistant instructor at the Rice Institute, abandoned the pursuit of a doctorate and left Harvard Law School. His life included political involvement, imprisonment related to socialist protests, and a long withdrawal from public life, during which he lived quietly and devoted himself to studies and publications under pseudonyms.
As an author he published on cosmology, the history of Indigenous peoples of the Americas, and urban transport, and wrote a book on reversible thermodynamics. He held a patent for a perpetual calendar and in adulthood was estimated to know dozens of languages. His legacy is ambiguous: he represents both the myth of the precocious genius and the tensions between public expectation and a choice for a private life.
