William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, was a prominent 19th-century British mathematical physicist and engineer, known for articulating and consolidating fundamental principles of electricity and thermodynamics. His formulation of an absolute temperature scale — now known as the Kelvin scale — introduced the concept of absolute zero as a natural reference, simplifying the mathematical expression of thermodynamic quantities.

Kelvin contributed to both theory and practice: he critically analyzed ideas about heat and energy, helped interpret the Second Law of Thermodynamics and, alongside contemporaries, promoted a physics centered on the concept of energy. He also applied his knowledge in industry, developing instruments such as galvanometers and taking part in engineering projects in telecommunications, including the laying of submarine telegraph cables.

His scientific prominence earned him the title of First Baron Kelvin of Largs and the presidency of the Royal Society. Despite a lasting impact on physics and engineering, some quotations attributed to him lack verification. He was buried with honors in Westminster Abbey, regarded among the most influential scientific figures of his time.
