Wojciech Witold Jaruzelski was a Polish military officer and politician who played a central role in the final decades of the Polish People's Republic. An army officer trained under Soviet influence, he became Minister of Defense in 1968 and established himself as the principal leader of the armed forces and the communist party in the following decades. As First Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party (1981–1989), Prime Minister (1981–1985) and Chairman of the Council of State (1985–1989), Jaruzelski led Poland through a period of severe economic crisis and social unrest. In December 1981 he imposed martial law to suppress the Solidarity movement and other dissidents, a measure that defined his political legacy. In 1988–1989 he took part in the negotiations that led to the country's peaceful transition to multi-party elections, paving the way for the fall of the communist regime. His role is controversial: he is praised for preventing a bloody confrontation and criticized for the repressions and detentions carried out under martial law. Born into a minor noble family, he was deported to Siberia in his youth, fought alongside Soviet forces in World War II and retained influence in the armed forces until their reformation into the Polish Armed Forces in 1990. His legacy remains the subject of intense public debate in Poland.
