Xul Solar, the artistic name of Oscar Agustín Alejandro Shulz Solari, was a central figure in 20th‑century Argentine arts, notable as a painter, sculptor, writer and inventor of imaginary languages. His visual work, often placed between the fantastic and the surreal, engages with influences from Cubism, Futurism, Fauvism, Expressionism and Surrealism absorbed during long years of study in Europe. He returned to Argentina in the 1920s and joined literary and artistic circles that helped raise his profile.
Beyond painting and sculpture, Xul Solar devised original linguistic and symbolic systems — such as the neo‑criollo 'x, a monosyllabic pan‑language and the pan‑chess — reflecting his interests in music, mathematics, astrology and mysticism. He published writings and composed the cycle San Signos, inspired by the hexagrams of the I Ching, which complement his creative universe.
His legacy comprises a multifaceted body of work that influenced generations of Argentine artists and thinkers; his Buenos Aires residence was converted into a museum, preserving a significant portion of his output and ensuring continued study of his career.
