Yva, the professional pseudonym of Else Ernestine Neuländer-Simon, was a German-Jewish photographer who rose to prominence in Berlin during the Weimar Republic. She became known for dreamlike images and multiple exposures, applied chiefly to fashion, nudes and portraits, and for a modernist approach that explored technical composition and avant-garde imagery. Her work appeared in major magazines and periodicals of the time and was shown in international exhibitions, establishing her as a leading figure in commercial and artistic photography of the 1920s and early 1930s. Financially independent, she ran her own studio and also worked in advertising—creating innovative commercial montages—while collaborating with influential agencies and publishers. Her workshop trained assistants, including Helmut Neustädter, the future Helmut Newton. Even after the Nazis came to power, she tried to continue working and even formally “Aryanized” the business in an effort to save it. Persecuted by Nazi racial policy, she was banned from working in 1938 and ended up employed in radiography at the Jewish Hospital in Berlin. In 1942 she and her husband were deported by the regime; although the exact details of their fate are uncertain, it is believed they were murdered in an extermination camp. Her work was rediscovered and revisited in exhibitions and publications at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries, reaffirming her legacy in the history of photography.
