Francisco Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas, known as the Duke of Lerma, was the favorite and chief minister of Philip III of Spain, exercising effective power between 1599 and 1618. Born into a noble family with ties to the Borja, he rose at court until he controlled the royal seal as Sommelier de Corpo, distributing offices and consolidating a client network that advanced his political and financial influence. His actions left a mark on administration and the urban landscape: he enriched himself through influence peddling and the sale of offices, and invested much of his fortune in transforming the ducal town of Lerma, sponsoring works and architectural commissions from figures such as Alberto de la Madre de Dios and Francisco de Mora. He was also a central figure in the temporary transfer of the court to Valladolid (1601–1606), a move that benefited his real estate interests. On the political front, he took part in major events such as the truce with the Low Countries and the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, but he faced growing opposition, financial investigations and scandals that led to the fall of his allies. In 1618 he sought the cardinalate and retired, later being ordered to return large sums; he died in 1625, leaving an ambivalent reputation combining artistic patronage and political corruption.
