Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, was an Anglo‑Irish field marshal and statesman whose military and political career shaped the early 19th century. He became famous for his commands in India and during the Napoleonic Wars: he distinguished himself at Seringapatam and Assaye, established his reputation in the Peninsular War, and won the decisive victory over Napoleon at Waterloo, securing his place among the foremost military commanders of his time. Known for meticulous planning and for choosing the battlefield to compel the enemy to attack him, Wellesley took part in about 60 engagements over his career. He rose to the rank of field marshal and, after Napoleon’s exile, served as ambassador to France and was granted the dukedom. In politics he served twice as Prime Minister for the Tory party, from 1828–1830 and briefly in 1834, overseeing significant measures such as the Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1829. He retained great influence in the House of Lords and remained Commander‑in‑Chief of the British Army until his death. The son of the Earl of Mornington, he was educated in Ireland, at Eton, and at riding schools in France; his personal and military career left a lasting influence on tactics and on military education internationally.
