Alexandra Victoria Alberta Edwina Louise Duff was a member of the British royal family and a granddaughter of King Edward VII. The daughter of Louise, Princess Royal, and Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife, she was granted by her grandfather the style and treatment of Her Highness, a distinction that defined her place within the dynastic circle independently of her paternal title. She succeeded to the dukedom of Fife in 1912 and in 1913 married Prince Arthur of Connaught, becoming styled Her Royal Highness Princess Arthur of Connaught. The marriage produced a single son, Alastair, whose early death had a lasting personal and dynastic impact on the family. The First World War led her into nursing, a profession she continued to pursue throughout her life; she trained as a registered nurse, served prominently in London hospitals and was awarded the Royal Red Cross in recognition of her services. While her husband was Governor‑General of the Union of South Africa, she took part in maternal and child health and welfare initiatives. In later years she suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and curtailed her public activities, but left memoirs in two autobiographical works on nursing and travel. She died in 1959, and her ashes were placed in the Chapel of St Ninian at Braemar.
