Adolfo de la Huerta was a Mexican politician associated with the constitutionalist movement during the Mexican Revolution, who served briefly as interim president in 1920 after the fall of Venustiano Carranza. Born in Sonora, he became a prominent regional leader: he was governor of Sonora, a senator, and held diplomatic posts, including the consulate in New York, where he defended Mexican neutrality during World War I. As a key figure among the Sonoran generals, de la Huerta took part in drafting and carrying out the Plan of Agua Prieta, which overthrew Carranza, and negotiated the political transition that led to his short presidential term. During that period he worked on reconciliation, granting amnesties and negotiating the surrender of revolutionary leaders such as Pancho Villa, with whom he arranged the transfer of a hacienda. After relinquishing the presidency to Álvaro Obregón, he became finance minister and negotiated the De la Huerta–Lamont treaty. In 1923 he led a rebellion against Obregón that failed and forced him into exile. Politically rehabilitated in the era of Lázaro Cárdenas, he returned to public service as an inspector of consulates before retiring, leaving a legacy as a protagonist of Mexico’s post‑revolutionary transitions.
