John Fitzgerald Kennedy was an American politician who served as President of the United States from 1961 to 1963, when he was assassinated. Kennedy served as commander-in-chief at the height of the Cold War and had to deal with an increasingly globalized economy, the end of the era of racial segregation, and fraught diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union and Cuba. A member of the Kennedy family and the Democratic Party, he represented Massachusetts in both houses of Congress before becoming president.

After a brief stint in journalism, Kennedy served in the House of Representatives for the 11th district in Boston, from 1947 to 1953. He was subsequently elected to the Senate for his native state of Massachusetts, serving there from 1953 to 1960. While serving in the Senate, Kennedy published his book, Profiles in Courage, which won a Pulitzer Prize. In the 1960 presidential election, he defeated, by a narrow margin, the Republican Richard Nixon, who was the incumbent vice president. Kennedy's humor, charm, and youth, along with his father's money and influence, were very important in the campaign. Kennedy and Nixon took part in the first live televised debate in United States history, which gave him an advantage. Kennedy was the first Catholic to be elected president.

The Kennedy administration saw a sharp increase in tensions with nations of the communist bloc during the Cold War. As a result, he maintained Eisenhower's policies for Southeast Asia and even increased the American military presence in South Vietnam. In April of 1961, he gave the green light to an attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro's government in the Bay of Pigs Invasion. On November 22, 1963, Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.
