Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Mravinsky was a Russian conductor, considered one of the great conductors of the 20th century.
Yevgeny Mravinsky, before entering the Leningrad Conservatory, studied biology at the university in Leningrad. His first public conducting appearance took place in 1929.
Mravinsky initially had a repertoire of ballet music, conducting the Kirov Ballet (Mariinsky Theatre) and the Bolshoi Opera (in Moscow). In September 1938 he won the All-Union Conductors' Competition in Moscow; in October of the same year, Mravinsky became the principal conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he would hold until 1988.
This 50-year partnership between Mravinsky and the Leningrad PO is only surpassed by Willem Mengelberg with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Ernest Ansermet with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Eugene Ormandy with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Among Mravinsky's legendary interpretations are six symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5, Symphony No. 6, Symphony No. 8, Symphony No. 9, Symphony No. 10 and Symphony No. 12.
