Adriano Panatta is a former Italian professional tennis player, best remembered for winning the Roland Garros title in 1976. Born in Rome, he honed his game on the club’s clay courts and distinguished himself as a junior in Europe before moving up to the professional circuit in the 1970s. His peak arrived in 1976, when—besides the Paris title—he reached No. 4 in the ATP world rankings and played a pivotal role in Italy’s historic Davis Cup run, delivering decisive victories in the final against Chile. Panatta is also famed for beating Björn Borg on the clay at Roland Garros on two occasions, a unique feat in his era. Across his career he amassed notable titles, including wins over elite opponents such as Ilie Năstase, Jimmy Connors and Vitas Gerulaitis. Despite a refined technique, he produced more modest results on faster surfaces and retired from the tour in 1983. After hanging up his racket, Panatta served as captain of Italy’s Davis Cup team, directed the Rome tournament and worked as an entrepreneur in the nautical sector, maintaining a public profile tied to Italian tennis.
