Alan Greenspan is an American economist and financial consultant, best known for serving as the 13th Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 2006. Trained in economics at NYU, he built a career as a consultant and leader of his own firm before taking public positions, including chairing the Council of Economic Advisers under the Ford administration. In his business career he also served on the boards of several corporations and on influential financial bodies. A leading figure in U.S. economic policy for nearly two decades, Greenspan became widely visible and influential in monetary policy. His tenure at the Fed was marked by expansionary measures in times of crisis and by the practice dubbed the “Greenspan put,” which prompted debates about the central bank’s role in preventing bubbles and crises. Scholars and critics have linked part of the speculative bubbles of the 1990s and 2000s — notably the dot‑com bubble and the housing boom that preceded the 2008 financial collapse — to the monetary policies of that period. After retiring, he continued to work as a consultant and commentator, leaving a controversial legacy that still informs discussions about financial regulation, macroeconomic stability, and the limits of central bank intervention.
