Alan Curtis Kay is an American computer scientist recognized as one of the pioneers of object-oriented programming and the creator of the Smalltalk language. His career developed at influential research centers such as Xerox PARC, where he led projects that combined language design, graphical interfaces, and networking, and contributed to technologies including Ethernet, the laser printer, and the client–server model. He received the Turing Award in 2003 for the impact of his ideas.
Kay articulated innovative concepts about the role of the computer in education, advocating portable devices for children and envisioning the Dynabook — a conceptual prototype that anticipated the laptop and modern graphical interfaces. In practice, he helped design the Alto, one of the first networked personal computers, and applied principles of educational psychology to make programming accessible to young learners.
Over the course of his career he worked at organizations such as Atari, Apple, and Walt Disney Imagineering, and founded the Viewpoints Research Institute, dedicated to childhood learning and advanced software development. In addition to his work as a researcher, Kay has a musical background as a keyboardist and guitarist, and is known for aphorisms that encapsulate his views on innovation and creative failure.
