Alan Mathison Turing was a British mathematician, logician and scientist whose work founded the theoretical science of computation and influenced artificial intelligence. He formalized the concept of algorithm and computation through the Turing machine, a fundamental model for general-purpose computers, and contributed to the development of stored-program machines after the war. During the Second World War, Turing worked at Bletchley Park in the Government Code and Cypher School, where he led Hut 8 and devised techniques and electromechanical devices that sped the breaking of the Enigma cipher. His work in cryptanalysis was decisive for intercepting German communications, contributing to Allied victories in engagements such as the Battle of the Atlantic. After the conflict, he devoted himself to building computers and to research in mathematical biology, proposing theories of morphogenesis that anticipated later discoveries. Although internationally recognized, he was persecuted for his homosexuality — a conviction that led to chemical treatment and to his death in 1954. Decades later he received official apologies and a posthumous pardon, and his legacy remains central to computing, cryptography and theoretical science.
