Clarence Thomas is an American jurist who has served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States since 1991. Appointed by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall, he was confirmed after a controversial process that included allegations of misconduct by attorney Anita Hill. On the Court, Thomas has established a reputation as its most conservative member, adopting a textualist approach and seeking to preserve the original understanding of the Constitution. His professional career includes positions in government and the private sector: he served as an assistant attorney general in Missouri, as counsel to Senator John Danforth, as Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the Department of Education, and as a member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, to which he was appointed by Ronald Reagan. In 1990 he served on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit before his elevation to the Supreme Court. Originally from Pin Point, Georgia, and educated at the College of the Holy Cross and Yale Law School, Thomas is known for advocating a narrow view of federal power in favor of federalism, for strengthening rights under the Second and Tenth Amendments, and concurrently for positions that favor a strong Executive. His influence shapes key decisions on the limits of government and individual rights.
