Infanta of Spain, daughter of Queen Isabel II and King Consort Francisco de Asís, María de la Paz de Borbón was a figure of the European high nobility in the late nineteenth century. Raised between exile and return to court, she received a religious and cultural education in France and Italy, standing out for literary and artistic interests: she wrote poems, painted, played the harp and even published articles in the newspaper ABC. Her education also included knowledge of Spanish history and a deep Catholic religiosity. In 1883 she married her cousin, Prince Ludwig Ferdinand of Bavaria, moving to the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, where she lived for much of her adult life. The marriage consolidated dynastic ties between the houses of Bourbon and Wittelsbach and brought her residence into contact with Bavarian courtly and cultural circles. María de la Paz was remembered for a gentle, discreet temperament, unlike her more combative sisters; she led a relatively private life devoted to the arts and religion. Her legacy is primarily that of an infanta who was culturally active and who helped integrate Hispanic and Bavarian dynastic traditions at the end of the traditional European monarchical era.
