Alfred Charles Kinsey was a biologist, entomologist, university professor and a pioneer of sexology in the United States. At Indiana University he founded in 1947 the institute that now bears his name and published two foundational studies — Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953) — which introduced methodologies and categories such as the well-known Kinsey Scale. His work examined large-scale patterns of sexual behavior and sparked intense debate in the 1940s and 1950s. Kinsey used detailed interviews and observation and, according to reports, experimental practices that have since become controversial regarding ethics, sampling and research procedures. Some of his data, particularly relating to activities involving children and to sources of information, were later questioned. Despite the criticism, Kinsey’s research is widely credited with helping to establish modern sexology and influencing cultural change in the United States and beyond by challenging prevailing ideas about sexuality, including female sexuality. His legacy remains central to studies of sexual behavior and to debates over methodology and scientific ethics.
