Alben W. Barkley was an American lawyer and politician from Kentucky whose public career spanned nearly half a century. He began as a county attorney and state representative, rising to the U.S. Congress where he served first as a representative and later as a senator for the Democratic Party. In the Senate he became majority leader and was a decisive supporter of the New Deal in response to the Great Depression.
Barkley was a polarizing figure in state and federal campaigns, becoming involved in disputes over the use of public employees in campaigns—episodes that helped spur the passage of the Hatch Act. His relationships with presidents such as Franklin D. Roosevelt and, above all, Harry S. Truman expanded his influence over domestic policy during and after World War II.
In 1948 he was chosen as vice president on Truman’s ticket, serving from 1949 to 1953 and acting as a spokesperson for the administration in critical moments, including the period after the Korean War. He returned to the Senate after a brief retirement and remained a prominent figure in American politics until his death from a heart attack while delivering a speech in 1956.
Legacy: he is remembered for a long record of public service, for his role in consolidating New Deal policies, and for his ability to build political coalitions in times of crisis.
