Baruch Spinoza was a Dutch philosopher of Portuguese-Jewish origin whose work deeply shaped modern philosophy. Recognized as one of the major rationalists of the 17th century, he set out a monist view in which God and Nature are a single substance — the famous formula Deus sive Natura — and developed a systematic ethics presented with geometric rigor in his Ethics, published posthumously.
His critique of traditional readings of Scripture and of a transcendent conception of God provoked strong opposition: in 1656 he was expelled from the Portuguese-Jewish community of Amsterdam and his writings were placed on lists of prohibited books. Nevertheless, he maintained intense intellectual activity, refusing academic posts and supporting himself with a craft trade as a lens grinder, collaborating with contemporaries on optical work.
Spinoza held a central place in the emerging Enlightenment and in modern biblical criticism; later thinkers from Hegel to Deleuze acknowledged the importance of his philosophy. His legacy endures in political philosophy, epistemology and ethics, influencing debates on immanence, freedom and the nature of reason.
